Lingering Confetti

The Super Bowl is famous for its confetti showers over the winners.  (Check out this video from Super Bowl XLV, and watch especially the big screen’s view of the scene on the field.)  The whole fanfare must be unbearably bitter for the losing team, but it makes for a great celebration for the winners and their fans.

I don’t know how long it takes for the final piece of confetti to come to rest on the field of play, but it occurs to me that we are approaching something like that moment.  It’s the moment when the celebration is over -- when it’s time to move on.

Now, personally, I’m going to relish that Super Bowl for many years to come!  But, we do have to recognize that the rest of the sports world is going to move on.  And this coming weekend’s Final Four is the first symbolic step.

Each time you surf over to SI.com, you are pleasantly reminded of the Packers’ achievement by the prominent offer in the upper left hand corner: “Get the Packers Championship Package Free.” In a few days, that offer will be replaced by one touting Kentucky, Butler, VCU, or UConn.  So enjoy it while it lasts, Packer fans!

Meanwhile, evidence that the football world is beginning to move on to the next big thing is all the pre-draft talk.  Don Banks has put out a Mock Draft to offer some insight and analysis about each team’s needs and options.  For myself, I just like looking at our spot on the draft board -- last!  Ah, the first shall be last, indeed!

Of course, with the labor negotiations being what they are, we may have more than the usual period of time to savor our Super Bowl win, for that game may be the last one played for a long while.

Naturally, I dread the prospect of not having football when September rolls around, and I’m still hopeful that a deal gets done in time.  But is there any team better equipped for a work stoppage?  We obviously already have all the pieces in place to win.  We’re young.  And we have a GM who is notorious for eschewing free agency and building through the draft -- which is all anyone can do right now!

So life is good in Packerland!

Meanwhile, even as the last symbolic piece of confetti is about to fall this weekend, enjoy this video of the final plays and initial celebration from Super Bowl XLV.  It’s great to relive!  Also, it’s rather fun to see all the dumbfounded Pittsburgh fans in the foreground, all texting their friends and loved ones, saying, “I can’t believe how much money I spent just to watch the Steelers lose!”

It’s a great view -- and it’s great viewing!
